Clare Selley

Trustee and member of the Personnel Sub-Committee

I have been involved in Balloons since its inception in 2006. Firstly, helping to set the charity up, and from then as a trustee. I feel passionately about the value of the work that Balloons does, having witnessed first hand in my role as a palliative care specialist nurse, just how precious those final weeks and days can be for families, and how they can have huge implications for dealing with grief in the years to come if children are excluded at this time. Apart from my paid job and my work as a trustee, I am the mum of four grown up children and the ‘granny’ to four grandchildren! I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work abroad, and spent several weeks each year working as a volunteer, teaching palliative care to the nurses in India and Nepal.

Drummond Johnstone

Trustee and member of the Personnel Sub-Committee

Drummond taught in secondary schools in Devon, Essex and Hampshire for sixteen years before taking a new direction by entering the world of publishing. For the past eighteeen years he has been running his own company, Southgate Publishers, which he now does with his daughter, Rachel. Southgate specialises in family learning and parenting books. Drummond has been a trustee of Balloons since 2009.

Julia Bradley

Trustee, member of the Finance Sub-Committee, member of the Clinical Governance & Safeguarding Sub-Committee

Julia Bradley is one of the founding trustees of the charity. She has a background in the criminal justice system and found that a significant number of her clients had suffered bereavements that had profoundly affected them and contributed to their offending behaviour. She decided to take action to divert others from following a similar course.  Julia is now retired.

Amanda Tyler

Trustee and Chair of the Clinical Governance & Safeguarding Sub-Committee

I joined balloons as a trustee in May 2013.  I work as an educational psychologist in Devon and wanted to bring my experience of working with young people and families to Balloons, especially as some of the most troubled young people I work with have, more often than not, experienced significant losses in their lives.  I wanted to support balloons in their work to support young people and families at times of bereavement and I wanted to bring my research experience to support Balloons with developing ways forward.  In addition to work, I enjoy travelling to experience different cultures as well as enjoying meditation, photography and the lovely Devon countryside.

Mike Betts

Trustee and member of the Personnel Sub-Committee

I was born in Essex and relocated to Devon 20 years ago due to work commitments.  My association with Balloons started in 2005 after I lost my wife to cancer; she was just 39. Being left with my 2 girls then aged 8 and 10 was a very daunting prospect, my wife (Angie) and I  had received tremendous support from the Cancer Support Team at ‘Force’ and after the ‘event’ I was put in touch with Balloons who were running a weekend in Exeter to support children (and parents) who like us had suffered the tragedy of loss.

My then employer was a keen fundraiser for local charities and when the time came to choose a new ‘good cause’, I had no hesitation in suggesting Balloons.  This in turn led me to being offered the chance to join the Trustees, again there was no hesitation. It gives me great pride to be associated with a charity that brings so much support to families/children who are suffering the terrible pain bereavement can bring.

I know from experience that support through tough times is vital so working with the Trustees is my way of saying a huge thanks to all at Balloons who helped me and my girls “dust ourselves off and get back on the horse” as my late wife would have said!
